Persistent concussion symptoms that don't just "go away"

For many people, symptoms continue long after a concussion. If any of these sound familiar, you're not alone — and more importantly, there are reasons this is happening.

🧠

Brain fog

Difficulty thinking, word-finding, or concentrating

💢

Persistent headaches

Daily or recurring head pain weeks or months later

😴

Fatigue

Deep exhaustion that rest doesn't resolve

🌀

Dizziness

Vertigo, lightheadedness, or balance problems

😰

Anxiety

New or worsened anxiety, mood changes, irritability

💡

Light & noise sensitivity

Overwhelmed by screens, sounds, or bright environments

🌙

Sleep disruption

Difficulty sleeping or waking unrefreshed

🏃

Exercise intolerance

Symptoms worsen with physical or mental effort

🔒

Neck tension

Tightness, stiffness, or referred head pain

🎯

Poor concentration

Unable to focus or stay on task

It's not in your head — and it's not "just time"

"You've probably been told to rest, wait, or give it more time. But for many patients, symptoms persist because the underlying drivers of recovery haven't been identified."

Post-concussion syndrome affects multiple body systems simultaneously — yet most patients are assessed through one lens at a time. A scan comes back clear. A follow-up says you should be fine. But you're not fine.

Persistent concussion symptoms beyond 3 months are not uncommon, and they almost always have identifiable, treatable causes when the full picture is investigated.

Recovery can stall when these systems aren't assessed together:

  • Neurological function and brain recovery pathways
  • Autonomic nervous system dysregulation (sleep, heart rate, blood pressure)
  • Inflammatory load and immune response
  • Hormonal disruption including cortisol and thyroid function
  • Gut-brain axis and nutrient absorption
  • Sleep architecture and melatonin regulation
  • Cervical spine and vestibular system involvement

Functional medicine meets concussion science

Rather than managing symptoms in isolation, we investigate why your recovery has stalled — then build a personalised plan that addresses the root causes.

01

Deep case review

A thorough look at your full history, prior treatments, and what hasn't worked — before we ever meet.

02

Multi-system assessment

Neurology, hormones, gut, sleep, inflammation, and autonomic function — assessed together, not separately.

03

Targeted investigation

Functional testing beyond standard bloods — ordered specifically for your symptoms and recovery blocks.

04

Personalised recovery plan

A clear, phased roadmap built around your body, your symptoms, and your life — not a generic protocol.

05

Ongoing support

We adjust the plan as you progress. Recovery is rarely linear — we work with that reality.

Frequently asked questions

Post-concussion symptoms can persist for months or even years — this is recognised clinically as Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS). Studies suggest 10–30% of people experience symptoms beyond 3 months. If you're still symptomatic, this is a medical issue that deserves proper investigation, not just reassurance that time will fix it.

Yes, telehealth is highly effective for assessment, history-taking, reviewing test results, and building a personalised recovery plan. Dr Blessing can order any relevant investigations through labs accessible across NZ, and overseas. All consultation notes and plans are provided in writing after each session.

Most concussion management addresses one system at a time — usually neurology or physiotherapy. Dr Blessing's approach examines multiple interconnected systems simultaneously: hormones, inflammation, gut function, sleep, autonomic nervous system, and more. This often reveals recovery blocks that standard care misses entirely.

No referral is required. You can book directly by email or phone call, however, referrals are also accepted. If you'd like to share previous test results or specialist letters beforehand, you're welcome to — it helps Dr Blessing prepare a more targeted assessment for your appointment.

Consultation fees are detailed on the booking page. Given the thoroughness of the approach, initial appointments are longer than a standard GP visit — typically 60 minutes. Any additional investigations will always be discussed and agreed before proceeding.

A normal MRI or CT scan does not rule out post-concussion syndrome. These scans detect structural damage — not functional disruption. Many PCS patients have entirely normal imaging yet experience very real, measurable dysfunction in how their brain and body systems operate. A clear scan is the beginning of the investigation, not the end of it.

This is one of the most common situations Dr Blessing sees. Patients who've visited multiple specialists often find that each provider has addressed their area well — but no one has looked at how all the systems interact. A functional medicine lens connects those dots and often identifies recovery pathways that haven't been explored yet.

You deserve more than "wait and see"

If you've been struggling with persistent concussion symptoms, a thorough, evidence-informed approach may be what's been missing. Book a consultation with Dr Blessing today — available NZ-wide via telehealth.
